My old friend Ron Millar is coming into town this weekend
from Fresno, California and we're going to golf until our
hands hurt then party like it's 1978. Man I'm old.

+ Cyphotilapia Frontosa aka "Humpheads"
Living in the town you grew up in can seem so 'towny'
but it has an upside. I have some of the same friends that
I've known since childhood. One of my closest friends is
Scott Middleton. Scott's an independent small business
operator with a passion for self-enterprise, mexican
vacations, and fish. He and I got into raising Rift Valley
African Cichlids years ago. Lately, he's downsizing his
operation and so he very generously gave me a 150 gallon
Oceanic tank with all of the accoutrements.
Visitors to the office in Waukegan will be able to see
my newest tank exhibit-style. We cut a window-like
hole in a closet wall which opens into the main foyer
and built a sturdy base inside the closet so that the
tank and lights are neatly hidden from view. All of the
carpentry was done by my buds Mike and Dave McCafferty
of Heartwood Cabinetry. They make high-end custom
cabinets for homes all over the Northshore.
I'm going to stock it with a few fish from Scott, plus
other fish that I've raised through the years. Additionally,
I intend to find a Chicago-area Cichlid breeder and pick
up a colony of Altolamprologus Compressiceps and Calvus.
Thanks be unto Scott!

+ SUMMER FUN
It being the small world that it is I ran into an old U of I
friend that I haven't seen in over a decade. Mike Tunget
was the captain of the flight crew on our United flight from
O'Hare to Columbus recently. He invited me up to the
cockpit to talk for a bit and I got an iphone picture for
my news bits. Mike's living in Springfield with his wife
and kids and making the friendly skies a safe place to travel.
Doesn't all good summer fun begin with some yard work?
Doing some of that... but I did have some real fun in
LA on my last trip. After getting all of my work done,
I was fortunate to be able to spent the last day
of my trip in Catalina which is a gorgeous little island
off the coast. The ferry ride is about an hour. I made
some new friends with a Texas Ranger and his wife -
Justin and Courtnie Chambers - and spent the day with
Adam, Camella, Rynne, and Aaron Harris of the band Isis.
Earlier on that trip we had a small cook out in Malibu and
the Isis guys brought their Corn Hole (bean bag toss)
game. Very amusing. Danny Carey and I were humiliated
the first couple of games but we came back to end the
match with a 24/0 trouncing of the evil Isis opponents.
Isis is a cool up and coming band that's playing 2 nites
in Chicago on the 26 & 27th of July. Go see 'em.
I did some golfing with Buzz Osbourne and Danny Carey.
Danny is a big athletic hitter. Buzz is a great friend too.
He's the singer/guitarist for the epic Seattle band The
Melvins. Around the world he's known as "King Buzzo."
They have a new record coming out called Nude With Boots
and they will being touring all over soon. In fact, they
will be in this area and you can catch them in Madison on
8/3 and again in Chicago at the Double Door on 8/4. The
opener is Big Business which features our good friend Toshi
on guitar. Be sure to say Hi if you see me at any of
these shows.
Summerfest in Milwaukee was a blast this year. We went
three times and saw Gomez, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood,
Derrick Trucks & Susan Tedesci, and the kids got to see
The Jonas Brothers for Hannah's big 11th birthday :)
Wow. Marketing to kids has never been more lucrative -
buy Disney stock...
Later this summer I'm looking forward to golfing, another
LA trip and seeing a few more concerts including Dave
Matthews Band at Alpine Valley, Motorhead, and Radiohead
which are among my favorites.
Here's a few photos from my treks.

+ A NEW GIFT
Today I received a new gift from a good friend.
Phil Campbell of Motorhead sent me the rough
guitar/bass/drum mixes for 11 new unreleased tunes.
I'm already learning the guitar riffs.

the record will be mastered and released shortly
after that.

+ Slant gets its wings with The Donnas
My partner Debbie Alagao and I recently signed all
of the legal documents and we are open for business!
So, Slant Business Management in Burbank is pleased to
welcome recording artists The Donnas to the firm.
The band will celebrate its 15th anniversary
this year with a Viper Room show in West Hollywood
on May 9th followed by an Australian tour.
We're honored to be in their trust. Be sure to check
them out.
My trip to LA this month was productive, eventful
and fun. I had good meetings with Tool's various
band members, lawyers, cpa and investment advisors.
Plus I met with Tool's label rep Matt Marshall and
talent manager Pete Riedling at Sony/BMG in Santa Monica
where we talked at length about some of the really cool
and very secret things Tool has cooking this year.
I also spent some time with Motorhead while they
recorded their new record at Sage and Sound Studios
in Hollywood. Phil, Lemmy and Mickey have some amazing
new tunes brewing and a tour beginning in June. These
guys define old school rock and roll. Phil Campbel
took some time off and we spent some of it in Santa
Monica on the sunny Third Street Pramanade fulfilling
our shopping jones and tipping a few lovely pints.
It's our Welsh blood. We had to.

+ TOOLishness
Lately, I've had quite a few people asking
about what Tool's up to now that they're off the road
for a while. The work behind the scenes on their
legal and business affairs never stops of course -
but that's typically not what people want to know about...
The real answer is the guys are doing some home
improvement projects and just enjoying some time
off relaxing with family and friends. Danny and Ad
are huge LA basketball fans (both teams) and going to
a lot of home games. Justin and Pete (Tool's Manager)
are both from London and are intense fans of
rival football teams, Chelsea and Arsenal - at gametime
you might spot them in the pub behind a Fuller's London
Pride Ale. MJK's success as an Arizona winemaker is truly
remarkable. His wines are getting rave reviews and he's
picked up more distributors. To see more about that have
a look at www.caduceus.org
and for more band news check out www.toolband.com.

+ 2 Things
I was lucky enough to see a music legend Wednesday.
Adrian Belew's new power trio project played Martyr's,
and if you're a fan of art/prog rock
I can't recommend it more - amazing.
The tour has headed east and the cd's in the stores.
I have an LA trip coming up the 13th - 20th.
Burbank, Hollywood, Malibu and a day in San Diego.
Not bad work if you can get it.
Please feel free to use the cell and email to reach me.

+ So the story goes...
At a recent concert in Glasgow, Scotland,
the lead singer of the band U2, Bono,
asked the audience for total quiet.
Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap
his hands once every few seconds. While having
everyone's complete attention, he said into the
microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child
in Africa dies." A voice with a broad Scottish
accent from the front of the crowd pierced the quiet:
"Well, foockin stop doin' it then, ya evil basturd!"
Kinda funny...

+ T W O COOL THINGS
MAJOR CONGRAT'S ARE IN ORDER
It's very satisfying to me to have played a small role
in a life changing experience for two different clients.
3 years ago I was given the opportunity to argue for
therapy instead of prison on behalf of two people who
have spent years addicted to drugs, being alienated
from their families, out of work and devoid of hope.
Thankfully, they wanted change more than the court
system wanted them to have it...
Today marks the occasion of the first graduation of anyone
from the now 3-year-old Lake County Theraputic Intensive
Monitoring Program [aka Drug Court] and 2 of the 3 grad's
are my clients. In order to graduate, these two
individuals had to quit using drugs/alcohol, attend
treatment, attend support group meetings, obtain
employment, obtain a valid driver's licenses,
report personally to court every friday afternoon,
obtain stable independent living conditions and stay
arrest free. No small task for those who have lived
their life in and out of the incarceration system.
Judge John Phillips has shown massive leadership,
strength, heart and humanity by organizing and
implementing the TIM program and it's staff to give
repeat offenders a chance to break the cycle of drug
addiction and arrests, reunite with family, obtain
productive habits and ultimately restore hope and
value to individuals long thought to be past the
point of no return.
I'm very proud of these two and their achievements, and
I'm equally proud of the the court system for breaking
the mold and going the distance to support them.
To top that off, yesterday, on Valentine's Day
one of my clients from this story got married to his
new love by none other than Judge John Phillips. What
goes around comes around.
CONGRAT'S TO THE HAPPY COUPLE - ALL THE BEST!!
GRIDIRON SHOW
For 3 nights of the last week, I've had 30 to 40
local attorneys and judges rehearsing Gridiron 2008
in the basement of my office. Every other year the bar
association puts on the Gridiron Show as their major
fundraiser. But better than that, it brings the legal
community together in a spirit of creativity to
write and perform a well-produced variety show.
The talent level is high this year. Here's a few
rehearsal photos - see if you can spot Bill
Clinton and Monika Lewinski.

jan 13 Back from California
+It's an iphone kind of world, isn't it? The ultimate in
communication, organization and creative fun.
It's the best gift ever. Check out the pic (angels singing).
After Disneyland we spent a lot of vacation time w/ family.
We did New Years Eve at the Grove and then at my sister
Audrey's for the ball drop. Then, for Ty's college planning
we took a day and toured the LA Film School and a state of the art
CGI company in Santa Monica called Hydraulix.
All in all, visiting Hollywood, Calabassas, Malibu,
good restaurants, a Laker's game, and the Pacific
Ocean was a very refreshing vacation.
Here's a few California/nature pix.
So, back to business - in addition to my legal practice,
My new business, Slant Business Management in Burbank,
Ca is set to open and I'm eager to see where that goes
in 2008. I'm sure to be writing a lot about that in
the near future.

+ Disneyland is as amazing as always!
What a great way to end an excellent year.
The Hollywood Tower Hotel ride with it's
Twilight Zone theme and falling elevator
is the best scary ride ever!
We also loved Pirates, Jack Skellington's Haunted Mansion
and the California Screamin' rollercoaster which we did 4x.
The whole park is particularly gorgeous at night.

Musically, it's Tool at their best.
Visually, I'm proud to say it's an artful collaboration
between my brother Adam, the painting master Alex Grey
and the CGI wizards at Hydraulix in Santa Monica
which is owned by the Strauss brothers who hail from
beautiful Waukegan, Illinois.

+ It's great to see my family, my own bed and even
my desk full of mail - but, flying back to
Chicago's frigid cold was a dose of reality indeed.
The last few days were a wirlwind to say the least.
I worked in San Diego all day before just barely
making it back to LA for Tool's Concert.
The Nokia Theater was beautiful and 100% packed.
The vibe was amazing, the show was stunning, and
the aftershow party was jammed with close family,
including my lovely sister Audrey, her husband and 2 kids,
a lot of good friends, and many celebrities.
I didn't get too much sleep that night...

+ What a week!
I flew into Portland and spent 2 days w/ my old friend
Hampton. We got fresh oysters, micro brew and
even had a chance to record a little music together
before meeting up with Tool for their concert there.
The concert was epic and highlighted by
my musical heroes Trey Gunn and Pat Mostellano of
the legendary King Crimson joining Tool on stage for
a very exciting improv during Lateralus.
Afterward, Trey and Pat stuck around and we previewed
the new DVD single Vicarious. Amazing and inspiring!
To top that, we were informed that Tool was once again
nominated for a GRAMMY in Best Rock Performance.
+ After Portland I jumped on the tour bus and rode to
Spokane where the band got me a rockstar
room fit for a king. I even did the mega
bubble jaccusi bath and still managed to
get all my work done by phone and email.
+ Today we're in Nampa Idaho. Gorgeous country
up here, tho no sign of Napoleon Dynamite. After
the show I'll ride the bus to LA for a hometown show
on Monday - then back to reality.
